Global Events Visionary: Gregg Talley, FASAE, CAE

With over 30 years in the Association/Event management industry, Gregg Talley brings a wealth of experience and expertise to Talley Management Group, Inc. (TMG) which he founded with his partner and father Robert K. Talley. Gregg’s repertoire also includes consulting with nations in developing business events strategies. His contributions to the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) as past Chair, to the Association Management Company Institute (AMCI) as past officer and his current Board Member duties for the Meetings Management Sector of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) highlights Gregg as one of the most sought after experts in the industry.

In between speaking engagements and consulting with organizations, Gregg shared some of his inspiration journey with MCIntl…

JN: As a Board Member of ICCA’s Meetings Management Sector, what are some of the strategies that you’re implementing?

GT: Well, first let me say that my work as Co -Chair of the ICCA Meetings Management Sector is done in conjunction with a colleague Co-Chair. So we jointly work with our members to develop programming that is relevant for them while engaging in dialogue about ICCA Board strategies. In that vein, we had some dynamic speakers on Value Based Pricing and its applicability to the PCO model. In addition, we have been discussing ideas on how ICCA can more effectively engage with association executives while providing even greater value to members in all sectors.

JN: What global legacies or impact is Talley Management creating?

GT: The legacy that I am most proud of is our work in Africa, specifically with the launch and growth of the African Society of Association Executives. There is amazing work being done by our colleagues on the continent. Connecting them to each other and then to the wider global network of professionals while creating opportunities for sharing and learning has been incredibly rewarding and meaningful. But for any of us working in the association world – our organizations and the accomplishment of their visions and missions leaves amazing legacies all over the world.

JN: What are some of your predictions for the meetings and events industry?

GT: WOW, no pressure!!  I am bullish on the face to face event industry. That human to human element can never be replaced to inspire, connect, and really understand each other. How we best do this across cultures, generations and communication/learning styles while being as inclusive as possible is still a work in progress and technology is a great tool in this effort. Events around us will continue to challenge the industry with changing business models, political and security “shocks” and various economic challenges. We have to make the best decisions for each client/event based on the audience and the desired outcomes. That may start to dictate some radical changes in our practices – from contracting and room blocks to tighter, better programming with more active co-creation, collaborations and festivalization within our events. More than ever, the pressure is on to make your event the “can’t miss event” in your respective space. Finally, I firmly believe that with the world getting ever smaller, we should all be doing global events. People to people contact and understanding can do far more to solve our problems than many of our “so called Leaders”.

JN: What advice would you provide to our readers?

GT: Stay curious, travel the world, engage and read widely, give back, mentor the next generations, keep learning, be authentic and have fun!!

In addition, Gregg lives a bi-cultural life with his Kenyan partner, Paul, and fourteen nieces and nephews in Kenya.

The Nordic country of Denmark makes for long summer days and long winter nights. The longer nights allow for more time to uncover the nightlife scene. So let’s explore the bustling nightlife in the capital of Denmark: Copenhagen.

As the holiday season approaches, it’s a magical time to venture into the Tivoli Gardens amusement park in central Copenhagen. During November and December, the Gardens feels like a winter wonderland filled with Christmas decorations and beautiful dazzling lights.

Situated within the Gardens is the elegant Nimb Bar, located at the Nimb Hotel. You can waltz into the Nimb’s heritage ballroom and have a one of a kind experience! The ambiance breathes of elegance with flowers, high ceilings, paintings and stunning crystal chandeliers. You can enjoy a drink of vintage champagne in front of the cozy fireplace.

If you’re in the mood for a little jazz, you can make your way down to La Fontaine. It is known as the oldest jazz venue in Copenhagen. Every night you can expect to be amazed with an exceptional jam sessions.

Looking for a relaxing environment? We recommend a visit to Freddy’s Unique Garden Union (FUGU) in a garden surrounded by lemon trees and lavender. True to Wonderful Copenhagen’s Localhood concept, the atmosphere allows for a great place to engage in shared experiences.

For those beer lovers, you can wander into Nørrebro Brewhouse. There are 200 beer selection to choose from including different flavors, styles, and endless options. With such a wide selection, chances are you will discover your new favorite beer paired with the hearty cuisine that Nørrebro Brewhouse has to offer.

The night is young and if you’re in the mood to groove to Copenhagen’s notorious club scene, be prepared for fun night out! A diverse mix of venues and crowds, Copenhagen offers the trendy Chateau Motel; the nightclub has 4 floors with each level highlighting a different genre of music. After a long night out, you may start to build up an appetite. Rio Bravo Restaurant is open until 5 AM on Friday and Saturday nights. Global Events Visionary: Ms. Queenie Jang

Queenie’s journey to Chief Executive Officer of one of the leading associations in Cell and Gene Therapy Research began with an education in Pharmacy which led to a Director Clinical Pharmacy role in a major teaching hospital, where her interactions with Patients, Providers (MDs, RNs) and pharmaceutical companies fueled her initial interest in the business model of drug development for unmet patient needs.  This ultimately led to receiving an MBA at IVEY School of Business.  Armed with a Pharmacy Degree, clinical pharmacy experience, and an MBA, Queenie was readily recruited into industry working in the marketing and commercialization arms of GSK, DuPont and finally as VP Marketing and Strategy with Sanofi.

She joined ISCT (International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy) as the Deputy Executive Director in May 2011 and quickly ascended as the Executive Director in January 2012 and the CEO in July 2017. In 2012, she started overseeing international meetings and events.

Queenie was part of my Hosted Buyer group at IMEX America where I was able to learn about her story and role at ISCT…

JN: As the Chief Executive Officer of ISCT, what legacies are you creating at your association?

QJ:
One of my key legacies is the creation and development of “ISCT,” International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy, as a global brand with visibility and immediate recognition across all stakeholders in the cell and gene therapy (CGT) industry and broader healthcare markets. The CGT market segment within the life science sector is the most innovative area of clinical research and has kicked into exponential growth this past year as a result of the approvals and commercial launches of the first gene mediated products in the US starting in August 2017.  With this vision to serve a rapidly growing sector and a disciplined focus in building quality driven global brand equity for the past five years, ISCT is now recognized as the undisputed leader in fostering the growth of the global CGT clinical translation field and is now well positioned to capitalize on this explosive market growth going forward.

Another very important legacy has been working with ISCT leadership to transition the Society on July 1, 2017 to an independent organization with its own head office, management and staff located in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia.  Recruiting and developing fully dedicated head office management and operations teams have allowed the Society to continue to expand its global reach and offer “state of the art” international Annual and Regional meetings for its global membership and stakeholders. Another source of accomplishment is implementing a business model for this independently managed Society that has made it financially sustainable, to grow in alignment with the market and to offer its members value added services and educational programs to address their many challenges going forward.

JN: What are some of the rewarding benefits (professional/personal) that you’ve experienced in your career thus far?

QJ:
I would say that building a high performance management team and staff for ISCT has been one of my most rewarding experiences.   The other rewarding experience is the very genuine and invaluable relationships cultivated with KOL clinicians and researchers working in the cell and gene therapy field.   Their passion and unconditional commitment to the medical field, patients, and for the Society’s mission to advance cell and gene therapies for the benefit of patients worldwide, inspire me every day. Their day job alone would fill a 24 hour day, but they find the time to volunteer their time, leadership and expertise for the Society, mentoring young members, presenting on behalf of the Society, often travelling on weekends and on personal time.  Truly inspirational and rewarding every day to be working with champions of this caliber!

JN: With a background in Pharmacy and an MBA, how has this helped in transcending your role at ISCT?

QJ: My background in clinical pharmacy, coupled with my MBA, has allowed me to rapidly grasp the medical/scientific concepts, their relevance to clinical opportunities, and the related market opportunities in cell & gene therapy product development. My executive experiences in the BioPharmaceutical Industry reinforced the critical importance of team building, collaboration and global reach for accelerating progress. In addition to this experience, being comfortable in communicating and working with the science, clinical, and business communities helps me see potential bridges and facilitate building them. All this led to me becoming CEO of ISCT, where I’m am involved in working with very talented CGT sector leadership to help enable this exciting CGT industry to grow.

JN: What is your favorite quote?

QJ: “I’ve learned that the common goal of solving unmet medical needs to salvage patient lives, is a powerful rallying force for bringing brilliant dedicated professionals and healthcare stakeholders together, from all over the world, to cooperate for progress, regardless of their individual situations.”

Vienna’s Convention Centers Promote Green Meetings

You may have seen the alarming news about the earth’s deterioration as time passes. A recent article by The Guardian suggests that “the world’s leading climate scientists have warned there is only a dozen years for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C, beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.”

Major and critical steps have been taken by different countries to combat the greenhouse emissions. World Bank states that 2.01 billion tons of solid waste were accumulated throughout the world’s cities in 2016. The garbage that heads to landfills release methane gas, one of the greenhouse gases that affect climate change. Amidst this news, the European Parliament recently announced the remarkable initiative to completely ban “a range of single-use plastics across the union in a bid to stop pollution,” as shared by BBC. Vienna is definitely aboard the save-the-environment train, setting an example to follow.

When you plan a meeting, particularly with one of the convention centers in Vienna, rest assured there are programs in place to host a sustainable meeting. The Austria Center Vienna (ACV), the Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Center, and the Hofburg Vienna all work closely with their employees, vendors, and partners to ensure specific standards are met.

The Vienna Convention Bureau (VCB), as well as the ACV, the Messe, and the Hofburg, have upped their sustainability efforts and encouraged having a Green Meeting. But what does it mean to have a Green Meeting? VCB describes it as one that is “characterized by greater energy efficiency, waste avoidance and an environmentally friendly arrival and departure of the guests.” In short, the efforts promote savings and cost reductions for meeting planners.

Working hand-in-hand with their clients, the ACV fosters Green Meeting initiatives officially through agreements with suppliers. Some examples include avoiding disposable cutlery, and giving more emphasis on using recycled materials.

The Messe Wien highlights the use of electricity from renewable energies, as well as energy efficient event technology and environmentally friendly methods of cleaning.

The Hofburg details their different initiatives including the use of glass bottles versus paper/plastic. Management has come up with presentable and elegantly-designed paper bags rather than the use of plastic bags. Also, something as simple as consciously collecting delegate badges post-event is an effort that they implement.

With these steps in place and the rise of awareness in sustainability, there’s hope that most, if not all, future meetings work towards being green. When sourcing for a destination, consider Vienna! It is definitely a city to look at as a model in making your meeting green.
